Release Notes:

Big Tymers Brian "Baby" Williams and Mannie Fresh step up their game a bit for I
Got That Work, improving both as rappers and songwriters and delivering two big
hits in the process, "Get Your Roll On" and "#1 Stunna." How You Luv That?, the
duo's debut release two years earlier, had set the Big Tymers apart from the
other, and considerably younger, Cash Money Records group, the Hot Boys. Unlike
like them, the Big Tymers are full-fledged adults; in fact, Williams and Fresh
produce the Hot Boys and thus play father-figure roles within the Cash Money
family to a certain extent. Yet, for as much game as they can spit, the Big
Tymers proved to be so-so rappers on How You Luv That?, often overshadowed by
their Hot Boy protégés. However, during the two-year interim leading up to I Got
That Work, Williams and Fresh considerably improved as rappers. Here, they're as
good as any of the Hot Boys, whether it be Lil' Wayne, BG, Turk, or Juvenile,
and they certainly boast and brag better, whether about money-making ("10 Wayz,"
"We Hustle"), bling-blinging ("#1 Stunna," "Stuntastic"), women-mastering
("Snake," "Rocky"), or themselves ("Big Tymers," "Hard Life"). Moreover, the Big
Tymers deliver a rambunctious club-banger with the album-opening "Get Your Roll
On." Following this rowdy beginning, the album moves toward its other highlights
-- "Nigga Couldn't Know," "#1 Stunna," and "No, No" -- before descending into
guest-laden complacency. As usual, Fresh's beats remain affecting until the
album's end, but the songwriting grows progressively less so, often seeming
unlabored, as if the Big Tymers are content to ride out the remainder of their
18-track album after delivering the early-album highlights. Regardless of this
common grievance, the Big Tymers impressively step up their game for I Got That
Work and deliver enough highlights to surely appease their fans.

│   For his first album under his distribution deal with Universal        ▐█
│   Records, South Park Mexican seems quite comfortable with his          ▐█
│   increasing popularity, rapping like a veteran here. It's nice to      ▐█
│   hear him handling most of the album's rapping duties after his        ▐█
│   previous release, The Purity Album, seemed more like a compilation    ▐█
│   issued under his name. The production is a bit more polished here     ▐█
│   than on previous SPM albums, and the rhymes flow much more fluidly    ▐█
│   than ever before, making it arguably the most well-crafted SPM        ▐█
│   album to date. If there is one major problem, though, it involves     ▐█
│   SPM's level of comfort -- he almost seems too comfy here, knowing     ▐█
│   that he's finally crossed over into major label territory. One        ▐█
│   somewhat misses the inspired efforts of older, rawer albums such as   ▐█

Before Eightball & MJG debuted nationally with Comin' out
Hard on Suave House in 1993, the duo released a number of
underground recordings, many of which were later compiled on
Lyrics of a Pimp in 1997. Of particular note here is
Eightball & MJG's first big hit, "Listen to the Lyrics," as
well as the early version of "Armed Robbery," their later
hit. The sound quality here is obviously lo-fi, as
independent recordings were still a rare occurrence at the
time, particularly in the South, yet the historical nature
of these recordings should interest die-hard fans curious
about the duo's humble beginnings.

R.I.P Big Moe

I might be late on this, but R.I.P. to Big Moe, the Houston rapper died Sunday [October 14 2007] of a heart attack the rapper had suffered a few days earlier. Now that being said, am not hopping on this dude's sack thinking he's one of the best rappers just because he died. I had his Purple World album, and deleted it off my computer just because it didn't have the song i was looking for (Barre Baby) but respect is due. I heard him on various DJ Screw tapes, and that's where he shines the best. His syrupy singing and flow are accommodating for those of you who like to listen to Screw Tapes while intoxicated.
